Steelers' Weapons Look To Unlock Offensive Potential

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin knew changes had to be made following a dismal offensive season a year ago. Even in a 10-win season the offense was vanilla and uninspired ranking in the bottom quarter of the league.

Tomlin hired offensive coordinator Arthur Smith to help revamp and re-energize this unit.

Following the final practice in Latrobe, Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson spoke to reporters and conveyed his excitement with the offense moving forward.

"There's so much that our receivers can do. We're really excited about who they are," Wilson said. "I think coach Arthur Smith's giving us a great chance to mix up the schemes and everything else. We've got playmakers all over the field. We've got a lot of speed."

Wilson, who might be losing his hold on the starting position, is on his last opportunity to re-establish himself in the NFL. Backup Justin Fields is said to be closing the gap daily, and if he plays great in the next two preseason games, could win the starting job.

Steelers receiver George Pickens believes that Fields brings another layer to the Pittsburgh offense.

"As far as all the plays and all the guys around, I'd probably say more dynamic," Pickens added. "At QB you've got Justin Fields. He's an athletic freak. We got him now, so that's pretty good."

While coach Tomlin won’t confirm anything about the quarterback position battle, comments like Pickens’ would lead you to believe that the players prefer Fields.

This will all play out the next two weeks of the preseason. The Steelers play host to the Buffalo Bills this Saturday night.
