Commanders' Dan Quinn Reveals Moment Jayden Was The Starter

    By Adam Schultz,

For most Washington Commanders fans, when the team selected Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 overall pick, it was a near formality that he would be the starting quarterback for the 2024 season.

While from outside the building, nothing could/would stop Daniels from being the starter, head coach Dan Quinn had a different approach - he wanted Jayden to earn the right to be named as such. That meant watching him intently and watching how he went about his business.

Whether that be how he practiced, interacted with his teammates and coaching staff, or implemented Kliff Kingsbury's offense, Daniels hit every marker this offseason.

And Quinn revealed that it was a practice before the Commanders' second preseason game against the Miami Dolphins that was the moment he knew Daniels was ready to be announced as the Commanders starting quarterback.

"The command of it, the accuracy, the details of it, that was one of the best practices I'd seen him have," Quinn said . "I think that was more in line with who he is, what he does, the checks, the calls, the communication, the delivery of the ball. He was just really on point. It was just cool to see all of that come to life."

Now that Daniels has been named the starter, his journey is really only just beginning; he must now lead this team into a new era with a host of new pieces around him.

While Daniels has been superb in Washington's two preseason games, when they face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1, it will have a completely different feel as he will be going against bonafide starters.

But there's nothing to suggest that Daniels won't handle that with aplomb based on what we've seen this offseason, but it will certainly be a different test compared to what he's faced in preseason.

With Daniels seemingly at home on Kliff Kingsbury's offense, the Commanders can feel good about what the 2024 season could bring, and with Daniels leading the charge, it is an exciting time to be a Commanders fan.

And those words haven't been uttered for a long, long time.
