With Quinn Ewers returning for the Texas Longhorns, Arch Manning is expected to be the backup quarterback this year.

According to the On3 Industry Rankings , Manning was the top quarterback prospect from the 2023 class. However, he has not started a game for the Longhorns with Ewers there. Manning appeared in two games for Texas last season.

On3 Sports' Andy Staples thinks change may be coming for Manning. He predicted that Manning would start in at least one game, although Ewers would remain the starter.

Staples clarified that he would not hope for Ewers to get injured. He pointed out that Ewers missed three games due to injury in 2022 and two in 2023.

"This is one I would prefer not to come true, and I don’t want anything to think I’m wishing ill on Texas starter Quinn Ewers. But the fact is Ewers missed three starts to injury in 2022 and two starts to injury in 2023," Staples said. "It’s also true that for a team to have the season Texas wants to have in 2024, that team would have to play 16 or 17 games."

If Ewers suffers another injury this season, Staples' prediction could come true.

Texas faces the Colorado State Rams in its season opener on Aug. 31. Kickoff will be at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
