LSU Coach Brian Kelly Drops Honest Admission on Defensive Progress in 2024 Offseason

The LSU Tigers struggled defensively last season. Many believe a breakout for the defense is the key to a successful 2024 campaign.

LSU coach Brian Kelly was asked about the progress of his defense over the offseason. He delved into what is different for the unit with new defensive coordinator Blake Baker while speaking at SEC Media Days.

"Everybody has their flavor of what the scheme looks like, and Blake (Baker) certainly has an established comfort level in a particular scheme. But it's relationships, it's getting players excited about stepping on the field ... Blake's ability to orchestrate that, to bring that together is what's been the piece that is really evident."

Baker comes over from the Missouri Tigers after helping the team to an 11-win season and Cotton Bowl win over the Ohio State Buckeyes .

The LSU defense has enough talent present to perform well in 2024. The team hopes it has the right motivator and defensive mind to bring more consistent play on the defensive side.

Kelly is looking for the defense to play to a higher standard. Last season, the Tigers ranked No. 105 in total defense allowing 416.6 yards per game. The team tied for No. 78 in the country in scoring defense with 28.0 points allowed per contest.

The Tigers lost three defensive tackles to the 2024 NFL draft in Maason Smith, Jordan Jefferson and Mekhi Wingo. New defensive line coach Bo Davis will look to bring the current group up to standard for the season.

LSU opens its season against the USC Trojans in Las Vegas on Aug. 31.
