Julian A. Dale, 29, of Somerville, was charged with fourth degree bias intimidation and a disorderly person’s offense of criminal mischief following an investigation into the incident.

According to Bridgewater Township Police Chief John Mitzak, on July 19 at about 6:34 p.m., Dale was seen driving a black Honda Civic with New Jersey registration onto the property of the Al Fatah Center, on Route 202/206. Dale parked near the entrance to the mosque and then left a short time later, Mitzak said.

At about 7 p.m., an employee of the mosque saw bias graffiti spray painted on a pillar near the main entrance to the building.

On July 22, Bridgewater detectives found Dale, interviewed him and subsequently arrested him.

Dale was taken to Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing.

“Al Falah Center was deeply shocked to discover the anti-Muslim graffiti following Friday prayer, a weekly ritual that draws dozens of Muslims in the Bridgewater community,” the center said in a statement. “The hateful message should be thoroughly investigated, and justice must be served in accordance with the law.”
