Police: Son severed mother’s arm with chainsaw, two officers injured
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Two officers were injured after a man reportedly cut his mother’s arm off on Monday, July 22. The New Orleans Police Department says 34-year-old John Pittman attacked his 70-year-old mother with a chainsaw around 2 p.m. in the 3500 block of Franklin Avenue in Gentilly.

A judge sentenced a New Orleans man this week to more than 12 years in federal prison after a jury convicted him of carjacking an 80-year-old woman at gunpoint in 2022. Shampain Poole, 23, will serve a 147-month sentence and five years of supervised release for his April conviction, in which a federal jury found him guilty of carjacking, brandishing a weapon during a crime of violence and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to the U.S. District Attorney's Office.

Police bodyguard accused of fraud and false statements about alleged affair with mayor
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Federal prosecutors are accusing a former New Orleans police officer of hiding a romantic relationship with Mayor LaToya Cantrell and filing false payroll records claiming he was on duty as one of her bodyguards during hours they spent together on trips abroad, at restaurants and at a city-owned French Quarter apartment. Jeffrey Vappie was indicted Friday on charges of wire fraud and making false statements. He is tentatively set for his first court appearance next week. His lawyers declared his innocence in an emailed statement on Monday. Vappie announced his retirement from the New Orleans police department last month. Cantrell has not been charged. She declined comment in a statement issued by City Hall. She is identified in the indictment only as Public Official 1 who was elected mayor in November 2017 and again four years later — coinciding with dates Cantrell was also elected. Cantrell is the first woman to serve as New Orleans’ mayor.
Accused house swindler charged with attempted murder, pleads not guilty
NEW ORLEANS — A man accused of stealing houses from at least seven different people using forged or fabricated deeds pled not guilty to attempted murder Monday for allegedly shooting a man in a February drive-by. Police allege Jonathan Burden pulled up in a car alongside a man who was friends with Burden’s ex-girlfriend and shot him in the right shoulder. The man alleged Burden fired about 10 shots into his car at about 7:30 p.m. February 1 and hit him once. The man, who did not want to be identified, said he was lucky to be alive.
