Analyst: City's attempt to make French Quarter gun-free zone may not be legal
“I’d have to side with Attorney General Murrill because there is no law that provides that that area is a gun-free zone,” ALL THINGS LEGAL host Doug Sunseri said. “What the mayor and the city are trying to do is they’re trying to call a dog a cat.”
Editorial: Permitless carry makes citizens guinea pigs in gun experiment
A state with the nation’s highest per capita rate of gun violence, Louisiana is about to embark on an experiment that most residents do not want. Permitless concealed carry, which passed the Legislature and was signed into law earlier this year, becomes effective July 4. That means, starting tomorrow, anyone 18 or older can walk around with a concealed firearm, no permit or training required.
Letters: Bridge lights illuminate that city's priorities in the wrong place
Whose idea was it to put decorative lighting on the Crescent City Connection? The traffic is horrendous. It takes me well over an hour to get to work in the morning. How much money is this costing the taxpayers? City leaders should do something constructive for the city. Tackle crime, panhandling, potholes or flooding. Who cares about decorative lighting? I'm sure it will look great, then residents can go into the CBD and get mugged, murdered or lose their car in the flooded streets.
After $29M funding snafu, Mayor LaToya Cantrell refocuses on drainage needs
Following a political dustup that ended with the Legislature’s stunning refusal to fund a critical Sewerage & Water Board power complex, Mayor LaToya Cantrell wants to refocus public attention on the decrepit state of the S&WB’s drainage infrastructure. Cantrell, who chairs the agency, is reviving plans for a...
Louisiana City Found to be Most Charitable of Entire Country
Often the media is focused on the negatives here in Louisiana. Sure, we have our issues. Crime, roads and crooked politicians continue to garner the lion-share of news headlines, so this might come as a huge shock to many. A new study shows that when it comes to caring for...
Letters: Insight on how to pronounce 'New Orleans' appreciated
Enjoyed John Pope’s article on the reasoning (or lack of it) behind the different pronunciations of Orleans. When we moved here in 2017, my wife and I were schooled early on by locals in the proper way to say the city, the parish and the avenue. Given that, it’s...
New Orleans residents will deal with temperatures that feel like triple digit heat on Fourth of July
NEW ORLEANS — Southeast Louisiana residents will be dealing with dangerous heat for the Fourth of July holiday. The ridge of high pressure that has been bringing us temperatures in the mid to upper 90s is still in place over the southeast United States and will bring temperatures in the mid-90s for your 4th of July.
Permitless conceal & carry law takes effect on Fourth of July
LAFAYETTE, La. (KADN) — News 15 Investigates is examining Louisiana's new permitless conceal and carry law that goes into effect statewide on Thursday. There are mixed reactions to the new legislation and whether it makes the state safer. One thing that most people I talked with agree on is...
A New Orleans nonprofit will build 192 new apartments in south Lafayette. See the plan.
A New Orleans nonprofit group that specializes in affordable housing has bought the property for two of its three planned Lafayette apartment projects. Atrium Housing closed on a deal to buy the 11-acre lot in the 200 block of Ridge Road for $1.45 million, land records show. It is planning two 96-unit projects at the site that will be called Ridge Commons and Loop Commons.
Concerns about damaged utility pole on Magazine Street
NEW ORLEANS — Irish Channel resident Peggy Nead was walking in the 2800 Block of Magazine Street over the weekend when she noticed a problem. “I saw this obviously severely damaged pole, and it was quite alarming, and I was sort of looking around saying, 'Well is anyone else noticing this?' It seemed like there was no evidence of anybody paying attention to it," Nead said.
