Newton County Deputy/SRO arrested, charged with domestic assault

NEOSHO, Mo. (KOAM) — Prosecutors charge a Newton County Deputy for domestic assault.

The incident happened over the weekend and Neosho Police Officers arrested 40-year-old Joseph Childers.

According to court documents, police responded to a reported domestic disturbance in town. They got there and found a victim with visible bruises.

Police took Childers to the McDonald County Jail as protocol for safety. This avoids an officer placed in the jail within their own jurisdiction.

The Newton County Prosecutor's Office has filed a charge of second-degree domestic assault against Childers.

He is being held without bond, but is scheduled to appear before the judge Tuesday, July 30.

During the last school year, Childers was listed as a School Resource Officer for the Diamond School District. The Superintendent is aware of the charge and is working with the Newton County Sheriff's Office. The district does not have comment about the charge or his employment status due to the ongoing investigation.

The Newton County Sheriff Chris Jennings says the Sheriff's Office is waiting for all reports and facts to be put together before a decision is made on his status.
