On Monday, our school board and administration engaged in a difficult, yet productive conversation on the district’s financial challenges. In an effort to be transparent, I shared an executive summary in advance of this important discussion.
At This Time: Music to their ears
To celebrate the new offices of the Music Institute of Chicago, Mark George cuts the ribbon outside 622 Davis St. George, president and CEO, calls the nonprofit Music Institute a “community music school.” It’s headquartered in Evanston – with the administrative offices, teaching facilities and the Nichols Concert Hall. It also offers classes to about 1,500 students in Chicago, Winnetka and Lake Forest. Why music? “When you do learn music, it it literally affecting every part of your body from the basic rhythm of your heart and your breathing,” said George. He’s a classically trained pianist but plays jazz, too. “And because I’m from Pittsburgh, I also know polka,” he said. (Photo by Richard Cahan.)
