The New England Patriots overhauled their quarterback room this offseason, sending Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars and allowing Nathan Rourke to hit free agency.

While they held on to Bailey Zappe, New England signed veteran Jacoby Brissett and used their first-round pick on Drake Maye and a sixth-round pick on Joe Milton III.

Through this point in camp, Brissett has been the most consistent of the bunch and his experience has landed him the starting job.

However, Maye will take over eventually, and his progression this offseason and throughout training camp has impressed new Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.

“He's been impressive and done everything we've asked him," Van Pelt said before a recent training camp session ( via. ESPN's Mike Reiss ). "He studies really hard and puts the work in. We've cleaned up his footwork ... the biggest thing I've seen from him is the ability to process quickly. He can go from the first read to the third read very quickly. He sees the field really well."

Maye played just one series in his preseason debut, completing two of his three attempts, and he still has a ways to go until he's ready to step up and lead this team for a full season.

The fact that he has some of these traits is what got him drafted third overall in the first place, and now he just needs to keep improving and adjust to the NFL game.

With a joint practice session and a preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles in the coming days, this will be a great opportunity for Maye to get better.
