    WHEELING, W.Va. –

Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack released this statement Friday on operations following local flooding:

“Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack remains closed due to the flooding, but with the Ohio River having crested at 10 p.m. Thursday and receding today, we have begun cleanup of impacted areas.

The hotel and gaming floor were not impacted, and critical systems were maintained using our generator. We look forward to the restoration of normal electrical power, which is needed for reopening, and are hopeful that portions of the property can do so in the coming days.

The racetrack was submerged, which means the sand surface will be washed away and require a full resurfacing once the river completely recedes. The resurfacing and subsequent inspections could take some time, so racing will be closed until further notice.

We thank all of those involved in the flood response, including many of our team members, as well as City of Wheeling Fire and Police departments and their emergency responders, Ohio County Emergency Management Services and the Sheriff’s Department.

We also thank our loyal patrons for their patience and will provide an update as the cleanup continues and we have more information.”
