WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The Coolidge High Colts finished their 2023-2024 season with wins in 7 of their last 8 games. This year, the team is hoping to continue that momentum from the first whistle.

After losing star players in Allante Stubbs and Malachi Williams, Coolidge will be looking toward their young players to take leadership roles. Senior captain running back Jaiceon “Way” Robertson has a few names in mind, including Tayceon Rushing.

The senior offensive tackle took pride hearing Robertson’s words

“That makes me feel great,” Rushing said. “Especially me being new to the community, I feel like I can have a big impact on the environment. If all of our leaders are feeling one way, then we can all come together and be great and just lead this team to championships.”

Robertson finished with 10 touchdowns last season and knows this season will be his last at Coolidge.

“It’s a little sad, but at the end of the day, that’s what comes with growing up. I did four years at this program, I know the ropes of it, so just helping the underclassmen know how to be leaders like myself,” said Robertson.

Head Coach Kevin Nesbitt is hoping to teach his athletes more than how to be successful on the field. He’s looking to show them life after football.

“I’m just teaching them to be young men, be pillars in their community, and just have respect for people and good things will come. When you do good things, good things will come. When you do bad things, bad things come,” Coach Nesbitt said. “My whole goal is to teach these young men other things in life than what they’re accustomed to seeing in D.C.”

The Colts will travel to Freedom High School (Cardinal District, VA), who finished 14-0 last season, on August 31 for their season opener.
