As summer nears its end and SMU gets set for fall camp the roster and depth chart are starting to come together. By utilizing the transfer portal and another strong recruiting class the Mustangs are putting themselves in position to compete in their first season in the ACC.
As Rhett Lashlee & Co. make their move into the power rankings, On The Pony Express provides an in-depth look at the roster with our Position Preview series. We now take a look at the future at quarterback.
In Year 2 at SMU
Keldric Luster returns for his second season with the Mustangs after getting into two games last year. He completed two passes for 23 yards and rushed twice for 12 yards. Luster had a prolific career at Frisco Liberty with over 5,000 yards and 53 touchdowns combined passing and rushing. He transferred to McKinney for his senior season and took the Lions on their deepest playoff run in recent history.
The 2024 class
Tyler Aronson joined the room this spring after finishing his career at Vero Beach (Fla.) High. He threw for over 2,000 yards and 23 touchdowns in 12 games as a senior.
He took third-team reps in the spring with Preston Stone out due to injury and everyone bumped up one spot. That will be key as it is unlikely he’ll see the field with the three quarterbacks ahead of him on the depth chart.
SMU on the recruiting trail
The Mustangs made waves my flipping Ty Hawkins from rival TCU after longtime commit Keelon Russell flipped to Alabama. He was an Elite 11 Finalist and is coming off a 2,000-yard, 24-touchdown season passing to go with another 800-plus yards and 14 touchdowns rushing.
Hawkins will finish his high school career at IMG Academy after starting at San Antonio Johnson.
