Rece Davis Has Unexpected Big 12 Program As No. 4 Seed In College Football Playoff

Kansas has continued to improve under head coach Lance Leipold, winning nine games last season for the first time since 2007. The Jayhawks also defeated UNLV in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, giving the program its first bowl win since 2008.
The Jayhawks enter next season as a dark horse for the Big 12 championship, earning four first-place votes in the preseason media poll. It would be the first conference championship since 1968, when Kansas won a share of the Big Eight Conference championship. The program has not won an outright conference title since 1930 under head coach Homer Woodson Hargiss.
On the latest episode of the " College GameDay Podcast ," ESPN's Rece Davis made a bold prediction that the Jayhawks would win the Big 12 and earn the No. 4 seed in the College Football Playoff.
"I'll say in the Big 12, they're not going to get the three-seed according to me, they will be the fourth seed," Davis said. "I think the Big 12 champion will be the Kansas Jayhawks. I mean, you think about what this would mean historically, their last conference title was in 1968 in the Big Eight."
Davis did expand on one major concern for the Jayhawks, which centered around quarterback Jalon Daniels's health. Daniels has been electric over the past three seasons but has struggled to stay on the field, including being limited to three games in 2023.
Daniels has recorded 4,297 passing yards, 31 passing touchdowns, 602 rushing yards, and 13 rushing touchdowns for the Jayhawks. Davis is confident that Daniels, if healthy, is talented enough to lead this program to a historic season in 2024.
"This could be the wrongest prediction that ever wrongest, wronged if Jalon Daniels does not stay healthy," Davis continued. "That has been a massive issue for the last couple of years now."
Kansas will open the season against Lindenwood on Aug. 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
