Commanders Down 2 Quarterbacks vs. Dolphins; How McSorely Fits?

Jayden Daniels is the No. 2 overall draft pick and - evidenced by last week's dazzling debut - a star in the making as the Washington Commanders' starting quarterback. Marcus Mariota is the veteran backup with 74 starts in the NFL over a 10-year career.

With two Heisman Trophy winners, coach Dan Quinn's team seems set at the game's most important position.

So why sign journeyman Trace McSorely, and how does fit into Washington's present and future plans?

The connection is pretty clear. McSorely, who starred at Penn State, played for offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury on the Arizona Cardinals in 2021-22. He knows Washington's system. But could McSorely beat out rookie draft Sam Hartman or veteran Jeff Driskell for a third quarterback spot on the roster?

Highly unlikely. This all the feel of a comfortable stopgap move, with McSorely merely a temp because of injuries to Hartman (shoulder) and Mariota (groin) will keep them out of Saturday's game against the Miami Dolphins.

Daniels is expected to start the game and be relieved by Driskell before McSorely likely gets garbage-time duty in the second half.

McSorley has only played six games in the NFL and made his only start during his time in Arizona. He spent time with the Patriots, Bears, and Steelers last year.
